Oregon’s Bellotti resigns
Written by neill in Friday, March 19th 2010
From the Associated Press wires:
Oregon athletic director Mike Bellotti is stepping down after less than a year in the position to become a college football analyst with ESPN.
Bellotti was head coach of the Ducks for 14 seasons before he formally took over as athletic director last July. His resignation is effective April 5 and he’ll make his debut on ESPN on April 17.
Bellotti’s announcement Friday came as a surprise. At a hastily called news [+]
High expectations for Huskers and other notes …
Written by neill in Tuesday, March 16th 2010
The first day of spring ball for Nebraska is still about a week away, but there's no doubt the Huskers have big expectations. When defensive tackle Jared Crick was asked recently by the Lincoln Journal Star about folks forecasting NU as a possible preseason Top 10 team, Crick had this to say: “It feels good, but we could care less about top 10. We want to be No. 1. I know some people may [+]
UT spring opener moved to stadium …
Written by neill in Monday, March 1st 2010
Interest in Texas' spring football opener ... in the words of Allen Iverson, "we're talking about practice" ... is apparently so strong that UT has moved the first day to Texas Stadium.
The practice is open to the public, one of just three practices that will be open this spring (including the spring game).
But open doesn't mean free -- at least when it comes to parking. Fans who don't have regular parking permits will have to [+]
Duck woes …
Written by neill in Saturday, February 27th 2010
Things are tough in and around the Oregon football program these days. Chip Kelly's players can't seem to stay out of trouble and the criticism is building.
Here's a complete Associated Press report from what's going on in Eugene:

PORTLAND, Ore. — The football season began with Oregon getting noticed for the wrong reasons. It ended with a Pac-10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. The offseason is [+]
Just a thought on expansion …
Written by neill in Wednesday, February 24th 2010
Here's something to consider when you're debating what schools might be invited to join the Pac-10 should the conference decide to expand.
Any invitation to any school will require a unanimous vote of the Pac-10's member institutions.
That's one reason I don't think Texas and/or Texas A&M are viable candidates. Not because they wouldn't be a great addition to any league -- but because I can't see USC's Lane Kiffin telling his president that he'd love to [+]
One way to split up a Pac-12 …
Written by neill in Monday, February 22nd 2010
San Jose Mercury-News writer Jon Wilner had an interesting idea when it comes to splitting up 12 teams in a new Pac-10 (although, the latest rumors have the conference now considering as many as 14 or 16 teams ... whew).
Wilner suggested splitting the conference like a "zipper," and putting the natural rivals (Oregon-Oregon State, Washington-Washington State, Cal-Stanford, etc.) in different divisions -- but having those rivals still play every year.
That way, the teams from the [+]
Texas as an independent?
Written by neill in Saturday, February 20th 2010
With all the talk about Pac-10 and Big Ten expansion, and what it will mean to other conferences around the nation, here's something that's being quietly mentioned -- but don't be surprised if it picks up a little steam.
How about Texas going the independent route, ala Notre Dame?
Don't laugh. I've been told that UT folks have been quietly bandying about such a possibility for several years. Now, with the Big 12 possibly facing a hit [+]
Expansion tidbits …
Written by neill in Wednesday, February 17th 2010
Looks like Oregon athletic director Mike Bellotti believes Pac-10 expansion is a very real possibility.
In a recent column in the Eugene Register-Guard, Bellotti told columnist George Schroeder, “It will be … a very serious thing that will be scrutinized very in-depth." Bellotti also said he thought the league’s presidents “are more willing than they’ve ever been to listen to the idea of expansion, and to consider it.”
But, as Schroeder points out in his column, it [+]
Five-star problems in Florida ..
Written by neill in Tuesday, February 16th 2010
The Florida Gators are having some problems on the defensive line -- particularly with their five-star recruits.
Over the weekend, freshman defensive tackle Gary Brown was arrested on two misdemeanor battery charges. An arrest report said Brown was not a good guest at a party. When two women who were hosting the party tried to kick people out, the 6-3, 280-pound tough guy is accused of striking the two women.
Always a classy move.
