NEWS: The state Board of Regents has approved the nearly $86 million renovation of Arizona Stadium’s north end zone, allowing the university to begin raising private funds to pay for it. VIEWS: The economy might be hurting, but the world of college athletics rolls on.
NEWS: Joe Barry is Southern California’s new linebackers coach, leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to rejoin former boss Monte Kiffin. VIEWS: Barry, a former Fairview High School standout and son of former CU assistant Mike Barry, will be a solid addition to the Trojans’ staff.
NEWS: Turner Gill’s five-year contract as head football coach at Kansas will pay him $2 million a year, including $1.7 million for television, radio and other media responsibilities. Gill will be the fifth-highest paid football coach in the Big 12. VIEWS: While that’s about what Mark Mangino was making at KU, it’s still a sign that the price of attempting to remain competitive in the Big 12 ain’t cheap.
NEWS: A memo from Texas Tech University System attorney Ronny Wall says Craig James, the father of injured Texas Tech receiver Adam James, threatened to sue the university if it didn’t investigate then-coach Mike Leach. According to the Associated Press, James spokesman Scott McLaughlin issued a statement late Wednesday saying James never threatened to sue Texas Tech. VIEWS: Since when does an ESPN talking head need a spokesman? And, my guess is that a university system attorney isn’t going to make something like this up. Texas Tech 1, Craig James 0.
NEWS: Texas will host BYU in a 2011 game in Austin, the first time the two teams have met since the late 1980s, when BYU took both ends of a home-and-home series. Texas will also play at UCLA that season. VIEWS: Good to see the Longhorns ramping up their schedule a bit. And, it’s just another sign that the MWC’s Cougars aren’t afraid to line up and play the big boys in their non-conference schedule.
NEWS: Nebraska officials announced that tickets for their April 17 spring game will go on sale Feb. 3. Reserved ducats are $10 each. Last year, NU virtually sold the spring game out, with 45,000 tickets sold on the first day of sales. VIEWS: Must be lots to do in Lincoln in the spring.
