Ugh.

According to an Associated Press story, Eastern Washington is going to take a cue from Boise State and install something other than the “normal” green artificial turf on its home field.

Boise State, of course, is famous for its blue field, dubbed the “Smurf turf.”

Eastern Washington will paint its field … red.  Former Eastern Washington standout Michael Roos, now with the Tennessee Titans,  has pledged $500,000 toward the project.
Eastern officials said the red artificial turf will be the first in the nation. No doubt. We can only wonder why Nebraska didn’t think of it first.

The Eagles said they hope to have the red turf installed in time for the 2010 season.

The question, of course, is what’s next? Orange turf in Tennessee? Gold turf at Folsom Field? Purple turf at Kansas State?

Please, please don’t let this become a trend.
